Do I need a WDH and an antisway bar?

Vehicle: 2017 RAM 3500 SRW with factory air suspension. Payload 3900 lb.

Trailer: TT weighing circa 8000 pounds wet.

I'm still shopping for a trailer as well as the hitch and any other accessories I need to tow safely and comfortably. I have read some but am completely new to towing.

Any help or guidance appreciated.

  • It depends on the length of trailer, tongue weight, and conditions. But I would say you will have a much safer and comfortable towing experience with a decent wd/antisway setup. Might as well plan on getting one.
  • I use an Equal-i-zer 1500 pound on my Chevy 3500 duly diesel for my (shipping weight 7769 pounds) 298RE Keystone Outback travel trailer. Yes, 7769 (shipping weight). Add everything to it, and it's over 10,000 pounds.

Get a good weight distribution system. You WILL need it!

    Edit:

You should have at a bare minimum 10% tongue weight. At 8000 pounds, that's 800 pounds on the tongue (at only 10%). Now, 800 pounds distributed evenly over the bed of a 3500 truck of any kind will be not noticed at all.

However, 800 pounds hanging 10 inches behond the bumper, well ... that's 800 pounds pulling the rear axle down (probably 2 inches). Mine squats almost 2 inches with 1000 pounds hanging a foot beyond the bumper.

Now, the "minimum" is 10%. Realistically, tongue weight should be 12% - 15%. Add that hanging straight down a foot behond the bumper, and you'll have headlights beeming at the moon!
  • I would use at least a WDH with that trailer/truck combo. It will make for a more stable towing experience.
  • I would with that size rig, but I've been towing for some time, so I'm biased...

If it's a little #5000 GVWR TT like mine, I probably would not worry too much about it..

Really depends on how much tongue weight you have and what your hitch ratings are..

Ford has 3" receiver hitches now that can handle in excess of #2000+ tongue weight without WD.. Some hitches can only handle #500 of tongue weight without WD..

So, depends on where your hitch falls on it's ratings and what you are willing to tow..

    Good luck!
