I may be missing the answer so let me ask another way. Why would you work camp when your at retirement age? It seems the jobs given to work campers are menial. It also seems they are labor intense for a younger person and yet with the wealth of experience and knowledge of us the jobs are less trying.
It also seems "IF" there is enough money to retire, buy an expensive motor home and or fiver and truck there might be enough money to just camp and relax rather than work.
Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not judging but asking why? I'm just about full timing and having a ball. I see no reason to work camp unless monetary circumstances dictate it to continue the camping lifestyle we've choosen.
That is the great thing about this lifestyle. One can mold it to meet their particular desires. You don't choose to work camp. We do. And that is perfectly O.K.
O.K. I will give this try, although other work capers may say it better.
Why we work camp when retired:
1. Free site rent and can stay in a beautiful place with good weather for more than 2 weeks.
2. An opportunity to "giveback" to the area.
3. An opportunity to make a difference. I present water safety as part of my camp hosting job. If I can keep one kid from drowning with my little talks..........
4. If you pick the right position, it is not menial, and you can set your own daily schedule. We even can chose our arrival and departure dates!
5. A small help with the budget, although, that is not needed.
6. It keeps you just busy enough (10 hours per week each person) to avoid boredom and the physical activity is good for you.
I am sure there are at least 100 other reasons, but this are my top ones.
#3 should have been #1. Good on you though. - gatorcqExplorerSusan and I met a couple last year, that had been on the road for 5 years.
The first 2.5 years covered 120,000 miles on a BWM motorcycle.
The second 2.5 years covered about the same miles in a different direction but in a truck camper.
Both times around the world. http://www.bcprod.ch/
The one item we discussed was not "WHY" but "WHY NOT". His friends and co-workers and employer never did get it. - Dog_FolksExplorerGlad I could help.
As to why work campers are doing jobs that seem not to fit their skills, sometimes the management does not recognize those skills. Sometimes the work camper wants it that way. Doing something different from their work careers is relaxing.
I managed working people for my entire working career. Now, I only want to manage me. I have absolutely NO interest in managing or supervising people at all.
As a work camper either you accept what is offered or look for a position that "fits" what you want to do.
When you find that special "job", you keep returning. We have committed for the position we have now, for next summer already. It will be our fourth summer with them, for a lot of reasons.
There are many conditions that makes the "job" special, for you, individually. When you find a position that fits really well, you hang on to it as long as you are content to return to the same place.
If you want to know what our personal conditions are for a great work camping job, PM me. It is too long to post here and different for every work camper.
Happy Camping - foxfire701ExplorerThank you "Dog Folks" for your answer. I'm trying to understand the why. The work camper's we've met clean up sites, build new things at the parks and general clean up. I've met people that that can drive anything with a motor and yet the campground owners have them doing chores instead of work they have experience in. So many of us have run crews, built buildings, etc. doctors lawyers Indian chiefs. Yet the work campers we've run into seem to be content with the light daily chores of the campground.
I chose to retire and sight see and general goof off. If that gets old and boring I wanted to know whats in store for me after that.
Thanks for your time and answers. - camperpaulExplorerWhen I get asked "Why?", I answer:
"Because I can." and "Because I want to." - Dog_FolksExplorer

- JW_of_Opechee_SExplorerCongratulations to all of you above: most people go through life making it hard, and complicated and they will never know how easy life can be and how simple. I don't full time or work camp but do understand those that do. I am happy to summer by the ocean and winter in Florida.
- noplace2ExplorerWe had to think long about this. DW told her 2 grown kids everything they needed to know when we made the decision. They were happy for us and had no questions.
In now our 14th year on the road we have NEVER been asked that question. Many questions about HOW?, but never WHY?.
