Why would does it hurt to be polite? When stopped any officer has three options of handling the incident precipitating the stop. Give the driver a warning and send him on his way. Give the offender a citation and send him on his way or the offender may choose door number three. Get your ass out the vehicle assume the position you're going to jail do not pass go do not collect $200 your car is also going to jail and your passengers just became pedestrians.

The only time I had to stand in front of the man was when I was stopped for doing 60 in a 55.
Forgot how much it cost me (I think it was < $100 - yes it was some time ago) but had the speedometer certified as being wrong (it was - I had aftermarket oversize wheels and tires)
Went to court had watched about 20 other people in front of me plead their case. In each case 2 things happened - one - it was obvious that they had argued with the Florida Highway Patrol and second - guilty and here is your fine.
They called me up. My case took less than 5 seconds. The FHP looked at his notes and said, "I dont remember this." Judge "Dismissed."
The day I got the ticket I said a total of four words to the FHP. "Have a nice day." Nothing else. I gave the FHP nothing to remember our exchange.
You have the right to remain silent. Take advantage of it.
Any LEO have any comments on my exchange?
(and no - I did not even have to show my speedometer was incorrect)
Yup, the less you say the better. Be polite and respectful. Even if it hurts and you don't feel like being that way.
I said that incorrectly and I apologize.
I have been in situations where I felt I was not braking the law, and the officer himself, was very rude and crabby. When I was younger a crabby person, swearing at you , even if wearing a uniform, can make you want to do something stupid. I didn't . That is why I made it to 51 and haven't been to prison yet.
I was just trying to encourage people to be polite in every opportunity. Even if the officer is not being polite.
This is true no matter who they are. (police officer or not) But, sometimes it is not easy. And, to me that can hurt. A personal flaw of mine.
