Don't idle your loud diesel at 5am for so long!!

If I wanted to listen to a newer diesel loud and clear, I'd be breaking the law and EPA guidelines. All three pickup brands making one tons have decently quiet diesels, and Sprinters are no louder than a gasser. To boot, here in Texas, the DPS (similar organization to California's CHP) actively will pull, smog test on the spot, and scrape off inspection stickers of any modified, smoking diesels. (One can thank the coal rollers for that.)

Older diesels could be idled indefinitely, but a newer one will end up having the DPF plug up unless a high idle circuit is put in, and those particulate filters can get pricy. Plus, new diesels, when they break or wear out, it costs a lot of cash. The high pressure fuel rails give excellent MPG... but it takes a lot of engineering to do those right, and injectors are not cheap.

BTW - Dodge is correct!
The "long periods" referred to, is when your DW is in the market and you sit in your p/up in air-conditioned comfort with the engine idling.

However, if you ran it hard, under heavy load - turbo cool down is SOP for *any* diesel.

Including an excuse (attempt) to *not* provide warranty repairs due to same.

Cooldown idle for a turbo seems much longer than warm up time. When watching my EGT gauge after towing on the highway it take take quite some time for the EGT to drop to a reasonable level before turning off.

At odds with Dodge who says not to idle the 2007-2010 6.7L for long periods because of soot build up in the EGR and turbo. Then on another page telling me to idle in order to cool the turbo.

Virtually all fire apparatus are diesels!

Fire 'em up for emergency response at 3:00AM and away you go !

Started (no pun) that with diesels in the late 1960's.

Never a problem with the engines.

Never a problem with low air.

"Low air" in an air system usually means there's a leak somewhere -
and a normal system that's been sitting a long time, should build sufficient pressure to release brakes in a couple of minutes.

Point is those 'minor annoyances' are caused by people who just do not care who they bother. They make little attempt at being considerate of others. In the scope of things yes, its minor. Would you be perfectly fine staying at a nice resort hotel and be woken up every morning by people banging on the walls and screaming? If it happened on multiple stays at that hotel odds are you'll stay elsewhere that's quiet. Not as easy RV'ing when a given area only has a couple RV parks to choose from.

What really funny is never once have I seen anyone let their truck idle in a parking lot for 3 mins before they get out of the truck to go shopping.... Never once in have I seen or heard any one let their diesel truck Idle before leaving a bar after being there all night...LOL

By the time a diesel idled out of a campground it is warmed up! No need to let it sit there and idle away!

Making quiet hours same for engines as for generators doesn't work. RV parks (especially near interstates) rely on late check in/ early check out rigs for a fair amount of their business. They get a full days/nights payment for a site using few resources. We aren't full time but, I've never heard a diesel run for 20 or 30 minutes. I'm sure it happens but...come on. Roll over or get up and make coffee, take a walk or whatever. I am retired and can nap whenever I want. DW is less tolerant than I am but has never complained of this. And she would......

I used to have it made at my stick and brick home. No Neighbor on one side for 12 years. 1/2 timer from Canada on the other.

Then a sprinkler business owner buys 2 acres next to me, brings his business with him after he builds a house. At least 6 big noisy trucks, trailers and in and out all day long from 5 am till late at night everyday. Also has three pitbulls that bark 24/7 in a cage in the back yard.

If I'm still sitting there idling longer than a minute after the spitter valve on my air dryer does its thing, you may kick my ass.
