OK and while the slower traffic is passing in a reasonable distance the 90+ vehicle can slow up and take his turn. Do not tailgate, do not squeeze by on the right. Just a little courtesy before you get back in the throttle.time2roll wrote:
Faster traffic still needs to yield to a slower vehicle when passing.
In most jurisdictions the law is the other way around, slower traffic MUST yield the way to faster traffic.
That’s why al, those big signs that say something to the effect of ‘Slower traffic keep left.’ or ‘Keep except to pass.’.
That pretty much sums it up. So everyone courtesy on the road and traffic will flow faster and safer. Make your pass and return to the right lane. Faster traffic maintain your reasonable following distance and continue on after the slower traffic moves over. But this only works if the faster traffic has a reasonable expectation that the slower traffic will actually do this. And judging from many responses on this thread that is not something that will occur. So we are back to the riskier right side passes because who knows if you have someone playing walking tall self appointed enforcer or someone just giving a little more distance before moving over. No different than not cutting through someone's campsite. It is just the right thing to do.
I think that sort of sums it up. Moving over is simply the courteous thing to do vs. impeding traffic flow (for whatever reason the slow driver feels is appropriate) Slower traffic simply keeps to the right. - mich800Explorer

Or maybe they grew up and learned to drive in a state that it is NOT illegal. Amazing how many of you think that the laws in your state apply nationwide.:S
I wonder how many of you who advocate staying in the left lane learned to drive without being instructed that the left lane was for passing not for driving miles on end when the right lane was open. It's nothing new that it's illegal. It was that way when I started driving back in 1960. Do you just disregard the few signs stating "left lane passing only"
It's the law in California, where you're from. do you know which states don't have the "slower traffic, move to the right" law? JaxDad wrote:

I was surprised on my first trip through Texas to find a 70 mph limit on a 2 lane undivided state highway that would be 35 in New York. Are Texas drivers twice as good? Probably not.
The left lane problem seems to be most prevalent in populated areas where the rule to live by is protect your little piece of the world. - AirdaileExplorer

I believe that's somehow related to another viewpoint on speeding in a vehicle: "You can ignore reality, but you cannot go on ignoring the consequences of ignoring reality."
I reject your reality and substitute my own - You can raise the limit to 125 mph. What is the minimum speed?
Faster traffic still needs to yield to a slower vehicle when passing.
And yes slower traffic needs to keep right except when passing even slower traffic. - bikendanExplorer
