I like it when I move to the left lane to allow someone coming down an on ramp to merge into the right lane. Then they speed up and match my speed even if its 85 mph, and ride right beside me for a mile. Then they mash it and come flying up on the right in an attempt to get in front of me in the left lane. I purposely pace them so they eventually have to get behind me which allows me to brake check em when they're riding 2" from my bumper.

Read that again; It ONLY applies to driving slower than traffic/impeding traffic. There is NO California law that prevents me from driving in that left lane if I am NOT driving less than the normal speed of traffic. Try again.
how about this Sac Bee article:

i think we agree. i meant that California has a law for "slower traffic move to the right". i don't think i said you couldn't drive in the fast lane.
This thread is awesome entertainment also......
Seems fairly clear.
“on California roadways with multiple lanes traveling in the same direction a vehicle shall be driven in the lane closest to the right side of the roadway. This lane is typically referred to as the slow lane or #2 lane. Vehicles driving in the left lane (#1 lane or commonly referred to as the fast lane) should be either be overtaking, passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction, or be preparing to complete a left turn.”
Let the spinning commence. Ahh, it commenced day ago LOL.

Have you ever been on a two lane road waiting in a left turn lane for the oncoming traffic to make a left turn, and the oncoming cars see you and speed up in an attempt to close gaps so you cant cross the lane? It's like they think that your crossing of the road in front of them is somehow going to cost them time.

No, it isn't. Can you provide me with the California Vehicle Code that says I must move to the right unless passing?4x4van wrote:

Or maybe they grew up and learned to drive in a state that it is NOT illegal. Amazing how many of you think that the laws in your state apply nationwide.:S
I wonder how many of you who advocate staying in the left lane learned to drive without being instructed that the left lane was for passing not for driving miles on end when the right lane was open. It's nothing new that it's illegal. It was that way when I started driving back in 1960. Do you just disregard the few signs stating "left lane passing only"
It's the law in California, where you're from. do you know which states don't have the "slower traffic, move to the right" law?

These laws exist because the folks who routinely drive in the left lane are the same ones who never check their mirrors.
In your state, perhaps. - JaxDadExplorer III

Why is driving here being compared to driving in Europe? Everything about driving in Europe is completely different. Completely - the vehicles, the roads, the laws, the driver training & licencing, driver capability, the enforcement, the terrain, the distances, urban density, etc. The annual per capita mileage driven in a car is much less than here due to alternative forms of transportation being very efficient, convenient and low cost.
And yet the European statistics quoted are based on “vehicle-kilometres” so “per capital mileage” is a meaningless reference.
However, “training & licensing, driver capability” seems to be key to the statistics.
There’s lots of other categories where training and society’s views differ wildly between Europe and the US also, but that’s another issue. - drsteveExplorer
