Duct tape is the type. Duck tape is the brand.
Actual duct tape, as is useful for ductwork, is quite different; it's generally more like aluminum foil with a sticky adhesive (and a strip of paper that must be peeled from the adhesive). It's also very handy and useful stuff for a multitude of tasks, as the foil is completely waterproof (though the adhesive may not be) and can be somewhat shaped as its applied.
I believe I read somewhere that this kind of duck tape originated during World War II, and was called duck tape because it shed water fairly well.
