Eaz-lift elite weight distribution hitch and air bags

Hey guy's I know this has been discussed before but here it goes.

I have a 2012 gmc 1500 with tow package. I've been to the CAT scales and I'm within my limits but at the high end, about 200-300 pounds from my payload. Trailer is 6500 pounds fully loaded.

With the eaz-lift wdh hooked up my front axle is back to normal ride height, and 80 pounds lighter than when not hitched to the trailer. The rear sags about two inches.

I get some porpoising when I hitting larger dips or bumps.

I ordered some Firestone airbags to fix the sag issue but I'm now thinking this may be normal and have also read that bags are not needed.

1. Should I try to readjust my hitch to help the rear end sag?

2. Go with the air bags? (I don't mind spending the money and know they will not help distribute the weight but think I'm OK there.

3. Just live with the sag? (it's a 1/2 ton and that's what they do) I'd love a 3/4 ton but not right now.

Also my eaz lift hitch has no washers but has what looks like an adjustment bolt which I do not see in any of the manuals (hitch was setup by the dealer and looks like it does not have any tilt, sits level) .

Also my trailer sits nose down, not bad but definitely not level. I've had zero sway issues (use the sway bar as well), I feel a little push with a gust of wind or passing big rig is all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • If you're still 80 lbs light on the front axle, I'd grab another link in the chains and see if that puts it where you want it.

Don't worry about the rear end squat with the load on. It's perfectly normal and perfectly OK.

I don't see a need for airbags to recover an inch or two of squat.
  • I'd get the rest of that front axle weight restored. That should get the rear end up another 0.5-1.0"
  • You need to restore weight to the steer axle, not just the ride height.
  • I forgot to mention that I have 6 links under tension and can't grab another link even using the power jack to lift the trailer first.
  • It looks to me like your set up is pretty good. Front height is back to original which is good. You could try getting the rest of the 80lbs back with more bar tension, but not if it causes the front to drop more than unloaded height. As for rear sag, 2" is normal and not excessive. Trucks are raked from the factory for a reason.

If you are transferring enough weight and your bars are parallel to the tt frame then you don't need more tilt to the hitch head. You want the nose of the tt to be slightly nose down as well.

Air bags will help with the wallowing and smooth out the ride. Make sure you have enough tongue weight as well. A tail heavy tt could cause wallowing too.
  • Pull up more tension on the WDH to transfer more weight to the front axle.
  • You may want to consider putting these on to compensate for the tail drag & try and get the TT nose to level again.

These can be engaged & disengaged as needed.
