Equalizer bars

I currently have an Equilzer wdh with the 600lb tongue 6000lb trailer bars we are looking into a new TT that would require the 1000lb tongue 10000lb TT bars. Are we able to just buy the new bars and replace the old ones or would be have to buy a whole new hitch

Thanks

  • I have owned a 10K, 12K and now a 14K EQUALIZER hitch.
Each time I moved up, a entire new hitch was required.
Equalizer even published this in their lititure.

Recently in another discussion, a member stated that the 12K and 14K bars are interchangable.

I never followed up on that, as it isn't important to me... Perhaps things have changed and the bars are now interchangable, at least in some cases.

Can I ask what is different with them? Are the bars thicker? When I search 10000lb hitch it looks identical to mine

It looks identical because they used the same design, just scaled up for the heavier bars.
  • The bars are thicker.

Several years ago we had to do just what you are facing when I went from the 600/6000 Equal-i-zer hitch to a 1000/10000 Equal-i-zer hitch. Had to purchase a whole new hitch.

If I were just starting out today, I would go with the Blue Ox SwayPro Hitch. Their one hitch head is the same for all weights. All you have to do is change the bars to change hitch capacities.

  • If you have an Equal-i-zer brand hitch you will need to purchase a whole new hitch as the hitch heads are different for the different weight bars.

If you are using the term "equalizer" for a generic weight distributing hitch, then in most cases the bars are interchangeable and you would only have to purchase new bars.
