Exhaust Fan

Does anyone know of a brand or maker of a better kitchen exhaust fan?
Mine that came with my Bounder is so noisy that my DW doesn't want to use it.
It sounds like beer cans strung together behind a post wedding couple's car on their way to their honeymoon.

I'm willing to pay extra for a silent one.
Thanks
  • Our microwave has the one we use. But I would be willing to bet a 4 inch muffin fan could be made to work. Cheap, but might take a bit of fabrication to make it fit.
  • I replaced the loud OEM fan in our range hood with this SilverStone High performance 180 mm Case Fan. It's so quiet running at the highest speed that I didn't bother installing the supplied speed control and just used the supplied jumper. I did add a small red LED to the panel though, so we would know that it was on. The only additional hardware I needed was some longer screws and nuts from a local hardware store.
  • There is one from http://www.fabulousoperatingproducts.com/ called the SAM-1, made by the former VP of Fantastic Vent. Rotten website- nearly impossible to find an actual picture of the thing, but you can see it in the Heng's upgrade instruction pdf. Uses a 3 speed squirrel cage blower.

This is the fan I used also.
  • We had a fantastic fan installed in the vent over our bed and love it. I know this isn't really an exhaust fan directly over the stove but it is reverseable an will really pull a lot of air through any window or other vent that is open, pulling out odors heat, etc. Mainly we have it to use at night to blow air in to the bedroom or pull it through the bedroom window.

Looks like the Heng's Upgrade would really fit my needs. I'm looking at the squirrel cage model similar to one I have at home on my over-the-range model that's built in under the micro wave.

Now, if I can only navigate through their website. I agree their website needs to hire a better webmaster.

    Thanks a lot.

I just did this upgrade about a month ago. I should point out that there is only one model fan box to upgrade a Ventline or a Hengs range hood. The Ventline is an easy upgrade because the existing fan box can be unscrewed and the Sam-1 fanbox screws back into the existing holes - plug and play. Upgrading the Hengs is much more complicated because the fanbox is spot welded into the hood. I had drill out something like 24 spot welds and cut some of the sheet metal to fit the Sam-1 box in. Once done it's a very nice upgrade it's quiet, has 3 speeds and the light is a huge improvement but be prepared for some significant work to install it if you have a Hengs range hood.
  • Before going thru the effort of a full replacement, have you tried making any adjustments to your existing fan? The noise you describe could simply indicate the blades are out of adjustment and hitting the casing as they spin. Mine developed a loud noise several months ago, and I corrected it by simply re-tightening a couple of mounting screws that had worked themselves a little loose. ST
