F250 w/ 12.5k FW

Your more likely to get hit by lightning than have an overweight towing liability issue. Really. Google how often people get hit by lightning and Google how often people get jambed up for towing overweight. See what gets more hits. I sleep well not worrying about either.

So, if your friend has the camper package he has the overload springs. If not, get airbags to prevent sag and done. He can also swap out the 2" blocks for 4" blocks to have more of an unloaded rake that will help keep the truck level when loaded. It's only about $125 in parts for the blocks and longer u-bolts.

Finally two people that "really" know trucks.

It just goes to show you how good marketing works. My boss has towed a 37' toyhauler all over the biggest mountains in the west with a bagged 2500 Dodge. It tows great with no problems.

It don't really matter if an F250 is a de-rated F350 or not, nor does the reason for the de-rate matter... what will matter is the legality of the combination of truck and trailer in your home state. I know Texas is getting aggressive with registration, licensing and inspection of both driver and rig.

He has a de-rated F350. Same frame, 6.7, tranny suspension, sans rears springs. Tell him to air bag it and go have fun.

It'll tow it, it'll be over the GVWR, it might be over the tires and maybe the RAWR, and if it has the 3:31's that most of the F250 and 6.7 have then it'll stay in 5th and 4th on secondary roads when the speed limit is 55 or less... but it will tow it.. I been there, I got the tee shirt, the coffee mug and the ball cap from that experience.. and my trailer is only 12.5K :D

What seems to get lost in all of these threads/mindsets is whether, in extremis, I can STOP it!

Biggest issue that some folks don't want to accept in case of a 3/4 ton truck is they have the exact same brakes specs as the one ton SRW so with a 5600 FAWR and a 6100 RAWR the F250 can have 11700 lb of braking performance.

Also what gets lost is the trailers braking. A 15k GVWR trailer may have tandem 7k axle = 14k lbs of braking or 25700 lb combined braking performance.

Starting the load and stopping the load isn't the issue with the F250 in question but like all haulers using a 3/4 ton truck..... does the truck have the springs/wheels tires to carry the weight required.

The bottom, bottom line here is that people will tow whatever they want with whatever they want, and no one or nuthin' ain't ever gonna' change their minds cuz' they've justified it.

Can I tow a 13K vehicle with a 3/4 ton wahtchamacallit? Absolutely! On level ground I can TOW it with a golf cart. What seems to get lost in all of these threads/mindsets is whether, in extremis, I can STOP it!
