Florida Hurricane I'm in the path

Well my first hurricane.
I am right on the edge of the evacuation area of Cedar Key.

Just bought a winter home in Florida. It needed a roof badly and I was proactive going into contract with a roofer. Only thing is he stiffed me on the start date. So here I sit with a roof that is till in need to be replaced in the middle of a hurricane. Praying it will stay on in 75 mile an hour plus winds.:(

Being a Northerner I always said the Floridians had it made. They get weeks of prior notice of a pending hurricane and pretty good prediction of exactly when it will hit. Plenty of time to prepare and/or leave.

Compared to us when a F5 Tornado hits we got maybe 10 minutes notice and more often than not zero notice.

Well as I sit here 'waiting' for the pending doom. I've changed my mind how well off the Floridans have it. The anxiety level of just sitting and waiting for it to hit is unbearable.

Prayers go out to all my fellow Floridians in the path of hurricane Hermine. Hope everyone stays safe. :C

  • Don't sweat it. At the moment it is barely a cat 1.

Go here . Click on Hermine & dig around. All the info is there including what is most important, the windfield information tell you how far hurricane force, storm force, depression force winds extend from center in all quadrants.

This is stuff the media seldom says anything about. Much better to scare the hell out of you into thinking the thing is going to roll right over you.

A cat 1!!!! PUH. We had a slow moving cat 3-4 roll over us in 2003. 24 hours of hurricane force wind. No electricity for 6 weeks. Now THAT was a hurricane.
  • According to forecast 75-85mph winds At that rate fences and trees will go down. Many will have roof damage. Insurance will help with both. Hope you have a little elevation because storm surge will cause most damage. This storm appears to be coming on in. The ones that rain on you for a day or two and beat you with winds for a day or two all the time gaining strength and the come in are the ones who really hurt you. Hunker down and we will be praying for the best.
  • Was your house built post - Andrew ? If yes, there were housing standards that were implemented to help keep roofs in place. AND - maybe you'll get a free new roof (shingles) out of the deal.

Tornados may be unpredictable, but hurricane winds last for hours over a much larger area.

In 2004, Hurricane Charley was supposed to make landfall around Tampa so they did have lots of warning. Only Charley changed her mind, turned right a hundred miles early, and came ashore at Punta Gorda with 200 mph winds. I think they had one day to prepare. A friend kept a boat in a marina near there so a week later, we drove down to check on it. The area looked like an atomic bomb had been dropped on it.

Hopefully this one won't be very bad and there will be minimal disruption.

    Good luck to you.
  • Little late to be shopping for those items now. As far as the contract for the roof, good move.
  • As a native Floridian, I've lived through 4 hurricanes. Donna came in 1960 when I was 10, so of course, I remember it as an adventure as we played cards into the morning and had good food to eat. Things were a mess for a few weeks afterward, but we made it through it.

We were in Charley, Frances, & Jeanne in 2004 and sustained no damage. Nor did my family, and we didn't lose power for any extended time. I certainly don't want to make light of it, as there were those who didn't fare as well, but you'll be fine. If you sustain any damage, it can be fixed. Just make sure you have the usual - batteries, flashlight, camp stove, jugs of water, fill the bathtub with water, canned goods-beenie weenies, soup, etc., charcoal for grilling, ice. And, fill up your car.

Will be thinking of you. Hang in there and ride it out.
  • Good luck !

I hope you have a bunch of buckets around for the leaks.

It might be all for the best that you didn't get the new roof yet.

It is much better to loose the old one then a new one that you just paid for.

My wish is that you come through it all OK

  • Its supposed to hit us tomorrow night and most folks around here are quite happy. We need the rain.
