Fuel Card Rewards

Hello,

I posted this in another fuel thread on page 466 so I think it has been lost in the mix because I know people have to have some good ones. What cards are yall using and what kind of rewards are your getting? Im looking to get one. Thanks!!!
  • For the diesel truck I only use Pilot (Flying J) and Shell. They are not actually "rewards" type cards but more of fuel "discount" cards. You get a certain amount off the price per gallon.
  • We prefer to shop at Kroger grocery stores - which can be hard to find while traveling. We get 10 cents per gallon for the next gas purchase with every $100 spent in the grocery store. Nice thing is we can often buy restaurant gift cards and get double points for our next fuel purchase.

We have the Pilot/Flying J RV Plus card and get 6 cents discount on gasoline, we also get a discount on propane.

We keep a Walmart credit card to use only for fuel and the 5 cents discount on gasoline if that is a last resort.

We haven't figured out the discount scheme on the Exxon/Mobil credit card. Some locations no discount, some 3 cents, some 6 cents and yesterday in New Jersey - 10 cents per gallon. Note - the station was offering gasoline for 2.19 cash and 2.29 credit. We got 2.19 with the Exxon/Mobil card.

We also use the Gas Buddy app and often find driving a couple blocks off the interstate or main highway can save us 5 or more cents per gallon.
  • First I'll point out that cards that give cents off are about worthless compared to % reward

4 cents off equals 4 cents per gallon
4% reward equals 12 cents at $3 per gallon

Often times I combine cents off loyalty cards together with the rewards credit card for extra savings.

    PNC Everyday Rewards Visa

4% on gasoline (up to $250 in eligible monthly net purchases)
3% on cinema and movie rentals (up to $150 in eligible monthly net purchases)
2% on groceries, restaurants and fast food (up to $750 in eligible monthly net purchases)
up to 1% on almost everything else (1/4% on first $10,000 in eligible net purchases each year, 1% thereafter with no limits

    CITI Double Cash Card

    1% on every purchase
1% again when bill is paid for a total of 2% reward on every purchase

With both of those cards in my wallet I get $100 or more reward every 3 months.
  • I have the Pilot/FJ card that gives me .07 cents off on diesel. In addition, I have my Discover card that gives me 5% off on any fuel, including diesel. Annnnd, I also have the Good Sam Card that gives me .03 cents off per gallon.

So, for 50 gallons of fuel and at $3.00 per gal....I can save $3.50 at Pilot/FJ (using my Pilot/FJ card) and can save $7.50 off by using my Discover. However, if I use my GS card and pay with my Discover, I can save $1.50 at the pump and get $7.43 back on my Discover for a total of $8.93 savings. Or I can go to any station and use my Discover for $7.50 savings.

However, if I use my Pilot/FJ card, I have the convenience of using the truck pumps and never have to go inside.

If I use my Discover, I have to go inside, estimate the $$ amount I'm going to need in fuel, leave the card, go back out and fuel the motor home, go back inside to get my card and sign the ticket. And the same if I go to any other station (if I use the truck pumps).

With my 42 mh plus my toad, using the auto (diesel) pumps is a real challenge and not one that I would likely do.

So, for me....the convenience of paying at the pump is worth the difference in savings...at least at the Pilot/FJ. At other stations, I of course use my Discover card and have to go in to do the transaction.

  • We use PenFed credit card get 5% off fuel purchase at any station - gas or diesel.
  • Thanks for the replies. After looking at every card possible, I went with the AMEX blue cash preferred. It gives me 3% on gas which isn't bad but it also gives 6% on groceries. I figure, "what are the two things I will need the most on a trip?" FOOD AND GAS. haha anyways, thanks for the replies everyone.
  • Don't know if you are going to be using gasoline or diesel on your trip, or if your RV or RV combination is 20' long or 60' long.

That could make a difference on where you fuel and what you use to pay with.
