Gas Ranges

It makes sense in a way: if you have a piezo-electric starter in the oven and the oven fails to light, the fumes could build up in the oven without anyone being aware of it, and then a spark/flame, and BOOM. Even an unlit pilot light could create a pretty good sized pocket of fumes in a couple hours. You're more likely to notice that a stove top burner hasn't lit, thus avoiding a build-up of gas. Making it a PIA ensures that the user is aware that it is lit. Also a certain amount of CYA by the company.

I installed the sparker to ignite the pilot light and it sure saves my knees. :)

atwood and suburbhan both make ranges/ovens with spark ignitors for the stovetop and oven.

However, I suspect it is "cheaper is better" for the mfg to not install these units

But it is easy to install a spark ignitor for the oven, do a search and you will likely find 100+ pages on it.

Mine is 2003 and it sparks automatically when you turn on the gas.

My oven has a lighter. I bought a sparker on EBay for a BBQ. It uses a battery and had 4 sparker lines, one for each burner and one for the oven. Works great and no one has to get down on the floor to light the oven.

Yes....stove top burners have had a piezo lighter for the burners for many years.

OVEN still using a pilot.


Several folks have done a 'mod' to burner and oven.

I just use a BBQ ligher to fire up stove top and pilot.

No gas pilot on our unit, button for spark.

because people blow thereselves up when they had a kit for them to use

the range on my TT uses a match/lighter to light.
