I have two big dogs, a golden and an Airedale and my son keeps them when we go on a trip. But late last December we took a two month solo trip to Jacksonville to visit a son. He lives a couple of blocks from the beach and almost every day we walked them down to the beach and they had a ball playing in the surf and meeting other dogs. Everyone enjoyed them and it was a great trip.
Then we took them and roamed southern FL and went to the keys. They were great travelers, in fact better than many adults I’ve traveled with. When we hiked trails in the everglades and such it was fine. When we wanted to sightsee, though, like in Key West, the downside surfaced. Even in January I felt it was too warm in the daytime to leave them in the shell. Plus I didn’t know if they would bark and annoy the neighbors. And there were many places that didn’t allow dogs. So I think how you’re traveling has a big bearing on whether a dog is a plus or a minus.
