GMC Sierra 2500 Towing Capacity

I was wondering if the specs that GMC lists on their website is true. They list 14,000lbs towing capacity for conventional towing and 17,900 for 5th wheel towing. I would like to upgrade to a 5th wheel and I like the GMC. I didnt realize there would be different specs. For those with the Sierra how do you like it and what weight are you towing? Thanks

  • The only difference between the 2500 and 3500 is an extra rear leaf spring. You could easily add an additional spring to a 2500 to get some extra payload capacity.
  • I have been looking at the chevy version of these trucks. Real world payload numbers on short bed crew cab LT models has been around 2300 lbs on diesel and around 2900 lbs on gas. You can tow some lighter 5 ers but the 3500 will net you some more payload. If you go gas make sure you get the 4.10 rear and HD trailering package.
  • 2015 GM 2500HD 3000lbs cargo, 17,000 5th Wheel,3500HD Single Wheel 4200lbs cargo, 17,100lbs 5th Wheel both Diesel 4WD http://www.chevrolet.com/silverado-3500hd-diesel-trucks/specs/capabilities.config%3Dcrew_cab_standard_box.html
  • Truck makers trailer towing specs include all types of trailers and not just a RV trailer so yeah there are some types of 17xxx lb trailers out here that can be pulled safely by a 2500 GM truck.
  • It comes down to payload as mentioned, which will come down to body style and options. A 2500 crew cab, std 8'box, leather etc, will probably have as noted, low to mid 2000 lbs of payload. If you have a reg cab, few options etc.....You have as I do with my 2000 2500, 3800 lbs of payload. So with two people, hitch, and pin wt for a 17K trailer at 20%, I might pull it off. If I did not follow the gvwr on the door sticker, I know I would pull it off, as I have over 4500 lbs of payload using the axel capacities. Most of that is on the Rear axel.

Trailer tow capacity is not a legal term, nor is gcwr for that matter, but axel capacities WILL get you in trouble with the real wt police in weigh scales, IF you should find your self pulled over. 99.9% of us will not be pulled over, if not 99.9999999999999999999% or higher.

  • Well the easy answer is: No way could the 2500 safely tow an almost 18K 5er as you would be way over the cargo capacity. With most 250/2500 series TV it's not how much you can pull, but how much can you carry. The pin weight is the major downfall, and with a 2007 your capacity is probably much less than the newer GMC/Chevys.
  • For towing a 5th wheel RV, most trucks run out of payload and rear axle weight well under the tow rating. 15000 pounds of loaded weight, which is close to 13k dry will have about 2500-3500 pounds of pin weight. Then a 250 pound receiver in the bed, driver, any other people and cargo in the cab and bed.

Diesel 3/4 ton 4WD crew cab GM trucks have about 2200-2400 pounds of payload. Gas equivalent closer to 3000 pounds.

Short version: 13k dry 5er, get a dually.
  • Personally there is no way I would consider towing with any SRW the numbers you mentioned. But you have asked such an open ended question there is no way to answer you.
