One technique I have used, and observed others using with good results is to effectively lower the rear of the pickup truck (and thereby the load angle), by either backing into a shallow ditch or against a bank. Obviously not available at all times but most times. It makes the drive up the ramp a lot less exciting! If you are near a Bike Week event (Daytona Beach, Sturgis etc.) ,you will see this technique used a lot to load motorcycles in pickup truck beds. On occasion I have not needed the ramps at all.
