Harbor Freight Tailgator generator review

Sweet little genny. Does pretty good under a load test. Could be a nice low price option for those that dont need to power a microwave or AC unit. Negative for some is that it uses mixed 2 stroke gasoline. But the benefit is that mixed gas does not degrade as quick. So the likelihood of a clogged up carb is reduced. Those of us with Onans know all about ethanol gas giving us carb problems.

  • PSA BJs pizookies are only $3 right now. Not so bad when you get them to go. They keep the ice cream seperate and cold.

Did this for 6 years, went thru 3 generators. They would last about 2 years and 400-450 hours. Most time in the fall and early winter, sometimes at below 0 temps. Not bad for 40 dollars a year.

That is one way to look at it. Most people want something more dependable !
I think that guy is rad!! Ever buy a cheap knife? My $99 Wusthof sits in a drawer because its easier to use the $5 Amazon paring knife.

Made in Communist China, no thanks.....China would love for us to all be speaking Chinese in the near future....Look at what they are doing to Taiwan & Philippines.

Some Honda generators are made in China, along with Japan, India, France, Thailand, and USA. (from Honda web site).

US manufactured generators include Generac, Northstar, and Winco. (from https://allamericanreviews.com/best-portable-generators/)

Do you know where yours comes from?

  • Does Harbor Freight still sell the Tailgator? I don't remember seeing it the last time I was in one of their stores. I usually look at the generators just to see if there is a good deal.
I checked the HF website and they don't have them advertised.
The same generator is available under a different brand name, unless the climate control people had them outlawed?
  • I bought a similar one also for the same reasons, cost was around $100, but the Pulsar 1200 1200 is a little quieter, 65 db claimed and has a slightly larger engine 72 cc vs 63 for the tailgator.
    Tailgator 700 cont, 900 surge
    Pulsar 900 cont, 1200 surge
weights are the similar, as is appearance.
Have had no problems with a sawsall or my skillsaw, but it cant handle a resi refrigerator.
  • I used to use those generators from Cabela's, different name same gen, would pay about 80.00 for it when on sale.
Used them at my old camper before I built my cabin. Would start it at abut 7-8 in the evening, let it run till it ran out of gas. Would go for about 11-12 hours on a gallon of gas. Ran the furnace, TV and anything else I needed. In the morning the battery was charged for the day.
Did this for 6 years, went thru 3 generators. They would last about 2 years and 400-450 hours. Most time in the fall and early winter, sometimes at below 0 temps. Not bad for 40 dollars a year. Noise was not bad at all. I had it on the far side of a wood fence and had to listen to see if it was still running. No neighbors so no big deal.
