Help with numbers please

Moving from TT to Fifth (Maybe) TV is 2016 Ford F-250 Diesel 4x4 Crew Cab 3.55 axle ratio. Max Trailer Weight per guide is 15,100 lbs

Fifth Wheel is 12,030 dry weight. State cargo weight should not exceed 2,882 so fully loaded could be 14,912.

For those of you with similar setup. Thoughts on how these numbers would work out in reality?

  • On 2/25 you wrote: “Not worried about weight.”

    Get worried.
  • Truck payload capacity is more important than towing capacity, when its a 5th wheel.
What's your truck's payload capacity and the trailer's pin weight?
  • Thanks for the help. Glad to confirm the 5th wheel weight number.
  • Actually, the OP is correct, his 5th wheel towing max is 15,100 per Trailer Life Towing Guide. Conventional towing is 14,000. Still, you'll be near your max limit so be careful how much you carry.
  • Your misreading thonhs. Max TRAILER WEIGHT is 15,100 poumds. NOT maximum fifth wheel weight.
Pull trailers usually place around 12% of their total on the vehicle. Fifth wheels drop approx 20% directly on the rear axle.
So to get a reasonably accurate fifth wheel towing weight number, go to the scales and weigh your truck loaded ready to travel. Be sure to get accurate rear axle load weight. Subtract the scaled numbers from the drivers door sticker GVWR and RAWR. That is your absolute max payload and still be within the mfg certified weights.
In your hypothetical fivers numbers it appears that you will drop around 3000 poumds directly on the truck. But that does not cover the hitch, another 150 to 250 pounds. Since mystical dry weights are meaningless, I suggest you instead go find the fivers GVWR and use that number.
