Highway merging rant

I guess I’ll never stop being amazed how most people merge onto highways from on-ramps. It practically never fails – here I am almost exclusively in the right hand lane, where I’m legally supposed to be pulling @ 60 mph, approaching an on-ramp, watching the cars coming about to merge and they aren’t looking at my slow-going 50 feet + mass taking up the very lane they wish to occupy until they are in the shadow of my rig. What to do? Well, you could easily step on this thing called the accelerator and take advantage of the several hundred feet left of your merge lane and be on your merry way (believe me, there is ALWAYS space ahead of me when you drive at my speed), but no, you must slam on your brakes (creating a dangerous situation with others trying to merge) and go all the way around me eventually passing me up on left hand side. Oh, by the way, it’s almost always impossible for me to simply “move over” to the other lane, clearing the way for these merging folks.

When I’m merging while not pulling, you better believe I’m scoping the traffic flow and if I see some honking semi or RV rig moving along in my merge lane, I’m making sure I’m positioned in a way that will benefit me and avoid being stuck broadside with these type of vehicles.

Now look – I know there are times when traffic is bad enough this method is not possible. And yes, I know there are some without the flexibility in their necks to allow this “look over the shoulder”. These situations are exempt. But I’m not talking about these! I’m talking about 80% of the people merging onto the highways when traffic allows them to completely avoid this. It happens time and time and time again, over and over.

Considering most everyone reading this pulls something or operates a large vehicle - you MUST see the same thing I’m expressing here…
  • I've seen the situation you describe hundreds of times and I share your frustration. ALMOST as bad are the people who want to merge at 40 MPH causing me to brake hard to avoid hitting them in the rear bumper AFTER they merge (then they speed up to 10 MPH over the speed limit). Not skillful enough to merge at a reasonable speed but they feel they have the necessary skills to drive over the speed limit AFTER they nearly cause an accident getting on.

    How true and this is why I don't usually move over except for professional truckers (who know how to drive).
  • while I completely understand, I think you have been incredibly kind to the idiotic indecisive merging fools… :B
    so I will add to your rant just a smidgeon if I may…

    best are those that do the hard brake thing causing problems for those behind them, then decide the accelerate when even they have no time or room for it… requiring them to fly and pass on the right berm now…
    or the parade of them that believe if only the first one makes it you are obliged to yield to them all…
    na, forcing you to yield to them because the one that makes it isn’t up to highway seed or your speed for another mile or two…

    if you do yield to them, they will ride to your right not advancing or retreating, then at some point they race past you as though you did something wrong…

    These are NOT exempt. If you cannot drive safely due to physical limitations one should not be driving. Folks without flexibility in their necks are just as dangerous as the careless ones.
  • What I find interesting is when I do move over to the fast lane to allow easier merging, these same people I moved over for, don't let me get back into the slow lane....
  • One of the man problems I see is that merging is NOT taught in most teenage driver's edge courses.

    My father was an truck driver with over 4 million accident free miles. Believe me, I was taught how to merge, among every other little detail of driving. It wasn't easy driving with him in the front seat mentioning every minor indiscretion, even as an adult, but I am glad I did.
  • If I see that happening as you describe, I sound my air horns to alert them I am there. Either they speed up or they are the ones that slow down.
    Many times I have slowed up a little but not slam in the brakes.....too dangerous. They are the ones to yield.
  • If people would take a safe driving course it teaches to plan when you drive and that includes merging.
    You are correct, that most people do not drive, or merge as they should.
    So, you as the safe driver must drive for them also.
    I always am looking for outs and driving as far ahead and as far behind as possible to plan for situations developing on the road.
    If only all drivers would take a course. And even though we do drive that way a refresher is always good.
