Fear of no backup to our home's main "furnace" (actually a heat pump system) is why we finally this fall had installed a variable level, automatic thermostatically controlled, battery ignition, propane fueled fireplace in the main part of the house.
Now with either a power outags or main heat pump failure, we can pretty much heat the entire house via the propane fireplace if needed.
It's great to have choices when faced with emergencies.
We have had the same in the the last two houses. Never again will we be cold during a power outage in winter. Also nice to turn on the logs on early in the morning just to warm the great room while everyone else is still asleep.
