That scan makes a digital image of the front and back of the DL so of course they don't need a paper photocopy, they have the picture of it in the computer.
... my drivers license was scanned and returned to me. No photocopying necessary. ....
My doctor's office is the only one I allow to make an image. When I show up for an appointment they click on the name on the screen and my picture pops up. Yup, same ugly guy as in the picture. For all others it is "look but don't touch". They just need a picture to match the name and address on the DL to verify who I am.
A copy of the DL is NOT a homeland insecurity requirement. In many cases they are required to state that a positive identification was made and that can be done by looking at the DL to verify the person matches the picture and the address given matches the one on the DL. - GaryWTExplorerHe who owns the land makes the rules. If you walk you are not getting a refund. They already have all the info anyway and if someone is out to steal an identity, I am sure there are a lot of better places than a campground.

Oh bosh. The clerk already has your license plate number and state. How much effort would it be to find your name and address from that info? What the heck are they going to do with it anyway? Many places ask for DL info when you use a CC. It's just no big deal anymore.
Why would you give your Drivers License info to some clerk who already has your credit card info. Now he has your home address and other personal information. What possible legal requirement can justify his demand for this information? Don t do it, you WILL regret it if you do.
Honestly, not everyone is out to get you. - SARGUYExplorerWhy would you give your Drivers License info to some clerk who already has your credit card info. - DutchmenSportExplorer"I would think the hotels or campgrounds may keep the record not so much for homeland security purposes, but for assessment of any additional charges for damages once you check out." DING! DING! DING!
Never had one copied, campground or motel, but looked at at both.
If they wanted to photocopy, I'd probably walk! - WyoTravelerExplorerI doubt it has anything to do with home land security. Good line though. I suspect if I owned an RV park I would follow that procedure. In todays world we are seeing so many absolutely crazy people, the crazies, if they knew their license would be copied would pass that RV park by. I have nothing to hide. The doctors office always copies my medical card and drivers license. Not much different. Those that are concerned about I.D. Fraud should buy that insurance. I have it. If law enforcement is looking for certain crazies they are easier to trace. In fact I may actually safer in an RV park where the owner has info on everyone. Sorry, just falling back on my traing of being a retired LEO.

It does ??? I beg to differ with you, as we stay at many hotels all over America and have NEVER been asked for a copy of my DL or Passport.
The same thing happens at every hotel on earth.... How's this any different? - EV2ExplorerWhat possible information is there that you are worried about? No one in their right mind has their ss# on their dl, so that leaves an arbitrary state assigned number, name and address that matches what you include in your registration or reservation. I suppose you could worry about your height, weight, and hair color, but that is pretty obvious as you stand there and on every security camera, Your credit card, while traveling, is another matter if someone copies the security code.

Not. NEVER has my dl been photocopied. The only place I've had my dl copied is at a car dealership when we've test driven a car, and then the copy has been given to me upon leaving.
In europe you won't check into a hotel without a passport.
Not true either. My company has people constantly in Europe-France, England, Norway, Germany-and none of them have ever been asked. Neither did Denmark or Iceland when I was there 2 years ago.
Part of the reason why a hotel will ask to at least see your ID is to make sure you aren't usurping someone else's reservation and to make sure you are YOU. - Lady_FitzgeraldExplorerEvery motel I ever stayed in made a copy of my DL.
