We live in Western Washington. Just garter snakes and bullsnakes (rare) both harmless. As long as I see them first I am fine and they do keep down the slug/mice populations. We have Mr. Snake who is 2+' long and over an inch in diameter. I give him a wide berth. I did find his intact shed skin in the pea patch so he is going after the slugs.
However, we are always really careful where we walk and where we put our hands in eastern Washington. We have seen 4 rattlers there in a 6 day period, around Sun Lakes and Steamboat Rock State parks. But, in the 9 weeks we have spent in the Southwest, we have not seen any rattlers, only tarantulas.
