Insurance rate increase after a claim?

We have Allstate insurance on a 10 year old fifth wheel. We had some body damage to the fifth wheel on a trip and it has been estimated to be about $5000 to fix it perfect, or about $3000 to fix it OK for a ten year old camper.

What is your opinion? Do we turn it in to the insurance? How much will our rates go up?

If we don't turn it into the insurance for a claim, we would pay for it ourselves and take the cheaper way. We probably plan on keeping this fifth wheel another five years.

Any opinions one way or the other?
  • Allstate will definitely raise your rates. My take would be to claim the loss and look for another insurance company. My recent experience with Allstate has been sour as they cancelled my homeowners insurance saying my shake shingles had dry rot. This occurrence happened without any prior notice and was in the middle of this winter. Needless to say I cancelled them after 25 years as a policy holder.
My son had a small accident $1500.00 after many years without and accident. His Allstate policy rates went up significantly.

Then the next company may charge you more because of your claim history.

Still, it should not go up that much. File the claim and have it done perfectly for that $5000.
Remember that you most likely have a deductible on that policy so you pay that first and the insurance company will pay the rest.

  • I doubt your rates will go up $1000 per year. If you are keeping the 5er 5 years then it would be cheaper to put it through insurance.
