Jeep Cherokee

Looking for advise wrt towing a Jeep Cherokee 4 wheels down. Pros & cons would be appreciated from anyone with experience with this vehicle.
We are looking at 2016 model with the 3.2L Pentastar V6 - 4X4
Do you need to pull fuses? Is there a maximum speed? Weight?

Any advise would be appreciated.
  • Never had the so called wobble on our Cherokee for the two years we owned it. Never had any extra wiring installed for the so called fix either. Towed perfectly. It was setup perfectly too. Great car to drive and tow.
  • So far so good, been towing my 2015 Cherokee Limited 4x4,v6 with no shaking / wobble problems, but you MUST have the ACTIVE DRIVE II factory option !!! At this time some people are getting a wiring harness installed to power the electric power steering.
I been towing the my Cherokee for about 3000 miles.
    Siggy

Not all 2016 Cherokees can be towed wheels down. Mine can't.

    You are correct.
Only 4 x 4 with Active Drive II can be towed 4 wheels down.
A lot of Cherokee models come with Active Drive I and/or 4 x 2 and none of them are towable.
  • Just got home from buying a 2016 Cherokee Trailblazer. Owners manual gives the necessary steps for towing + recommendation of having the Mopar wiring harness installed.

We educated the salesman and the sales manager to this fact thanks to information we took off this forum. Dealership checked and apparently we, the purchasers, have to deal with Chrysler to have this modification done. We have a number to call and make the arrangements. Was also told that Chrysler has been working on this problem for a while now and latest Jeeps are not having as much trouble as earlier models. Time will tell for us.

We sure appreciated the help from forum members wrt this issue.
  • Golden Horse, please make sure the dealer installs the wiring harness to make the electronic steering work while towing. There have been some dramatic issues with the 14, 15 and 16 Cherokees. These will wobble so severely you will think the front end of your motor has fallen off! This can happen when you hit the right rough spot on the road. There has been a long thread about these problems. Jeep finally found a solution after we posted a video last August. So far those who have had the wiring harness installed have not had the problem. If they did not warn you of this problem before you purchased it, they should pay for it! Good luck.
  • generally speaking, jeeps can be flat towed without time, distance or speed limitations or restrictions as long as tge 4WD transfer case has a manually selectable transfer case but check the owner's manual under Recreational Towing before purchasing.
