Jeep Liberty tow bar

How difficult and costly would a tow bar be to fit to an '05 Jeep Liberty?

Because of problems I won't go into here, I need to go get my mother-in-law and her Liberty, which is 1500 miles away.

The Liberty is a 2wd with standard transmission.

Many thanks

Have you considered flying up to where your MIL lives and drive the Jeep back by yourself, or take the bus? Going by yourself will not cause any problems with your wife and her job as far as travel time. Or as some of the above have implied, both of you go and one of you drive it back. Probably only use 100 gallons of gas, maybe less, and that's cheaper (and faster) than outfitting the Jeep with all the towing equipment.

Considering fuel for 3000 miles on the RV, that could very well be my best option. Thanks.

Remco says it is not towable four down. You need to verify information at their website as I do not know the exact model, etc.

If it was towable four down, cost would be about $2500 up for basic installation with no auxiliary brake system.

That's a great web site for this info. It offers a 6-speed manual, but I'm almost positive it's a 5-speed. I could have the year wrong. The 2003 5-speed says it is towable.

Nonetheless, I guess all things considered, I'll just drive it.

  • just drive both of them. can a 2WD libby even be towed 4 down?
    bumpy
  • Your wife driving is most likely the better option, even if a night on the road and she can get the extra time off.

It seems the tow bars can be picked up fairly reasonable, but the baseplate and installation adds the expense The supplemental braking (if required by state law or in my "weight" case, by Ford Motor Company towing requirements can also be picked up used. Not a cheap thing to do any which way you go.

Maybe someone will have more options for you, but I set up two cars from scratch and the last one, just baseplate and wiring (used tow bar on hand)
and it was almost $700. Got $39 installation at CW and had Brake Buddy.

Just my penny's worth... If the Liberty is towable (I don't know) I did a used tow bar, new baseplate, wiring and used Brake Buddy for $1800 installed. New I got figure of about $3,500 complete with new BB.

How about a U-haul it for the car? Some in our park put on a car on those and take it or some in here will get a car transporter to deliver the car for them.

Good Luck on getting the job done.

Oh! Wow! I did look at UHaul and thought it was too expensive. :)

My wife, who still earns an honest living, will go with me, so one of us could just drive the Liberty. But I fear she can't make that return trip in two days like I would. But maybe that's our only real option.

    Thx
