Keeping new fresh water tank clean

I just purchased a new TT and want to keep the fresh water tank clean and fresh for drinking. What is the best way to keep things from growing in it? Keep it full or empty? Flush it? Chlorine or other cleaners? I have good city water that I am pretty sure is chlorinated.

  • We store it empty and every year I dump 2 cups of bleach in the tank add water run the water till I smell bleach let it sit for a half hour or so. drain and flush with clean water.I add one cap full of bleach every fill since we are on well water. We drink bottled water but I make coffee and cook with the water.
  • I clean my tank and lines with a little bleach in the Spring. I flush it out several times afterward, before putting it into use.

I always keep the tank at least 1/4 the rest of the season, never draining empty, which IMO, is what causes growth to start. If it sits for more than a couple of weeks, I drain, and refill when I am going to use it.

  • I flushed our fresh water tank when we first got the 5vr (Oct. '06)
I then filled it up.........used the water....refilled...used (repeat process up to current date) and dang it still has clean water.

We FT and it is constantly being used.

IF we just camped occasionally I would fill.....use then refill for next trip.
After camping season I would drain and leave empty until next season then flush once and fill.

Unless you are filling with untreated well water, pond water etc. Then it's drain/sanitize with bleach mix/flush----fill/treat with bleach/use.
  • My best advice is always try to fill up your tank when you find a good water source. Always check the water before putting any in your tank. Use a good quality RV water line to the taps, rinse it clean before connecting, drain it and screw the two ends together before storing it away in a clean spot.

We have sometimes stopped at remote campgrounds up in the hills to fill our water rather than those spots down on the plains where it can get nasty.
  • if your home water is chlorinated, just run some fresh water through the whole system every three or four months. we're on a well, so we add a little bleach to the tank once or twice a year and flush that through all the lines etc.
  • Except for initially sanitizing with a very dilute bleach solution, no heroic measures are necessary. I flush mine out every Spring and, if I remember, add a little bleach with the flush water. I'm on my own well but you have chlorine in your water.
