Lanterns

Kinda reminds me of the old highway smudge pots,,,,its what was used before hazard cones!! they also used them to keep trolly track switches from freezing!

Not exactly the same class of lantern but this is what I put out if we are setup for any length of time.



They are called Yellow Dogs, I use Citronella oil in them. These are actually reproduction is a smaller size. You can google what Yellow Dogs were used for if you're interested.

OOppss. I did one of those dumb things several years ago when I went to pump it up and unscrewed the filler cap instead and released the pressure. Man,you should smelled the burned hair from my arm and the side of my head. No other real damage except to my dignity and the mild sunburn on my arm.
Still use the lanterns,one my family's from 1955 and the other my FIL's from early '60's, and also have both a two and a three burner Coleman stove. Don't use the three burner as it's missing some parts and the two burner is setup for propane and works super well.

I collected Coleman's for a number of years. The one I've kept is a 1927 Coleman double mantle lantern. I believe 1927 was the first year to have a pressure pump built into the fuel tank. It also has a ising glass (sheet mica) globe on it, though when I use it I swap out the ising glass for a modern glass globe. I've found that it's a great campground conversation piece.

I used to have a yellow-ish glass lens for my Coleman lantern. I got it because it did not attract skeeters as much, but it also quieted down the brightness. Maybe they are still available ?

I still remember two things about them - how fragile those ash mantles are and how REALLY HOT they get. I think you can cook dinner over the top of one of those lanterns.

That was taken about 7 years ago, that's my father's 45 year old Ash Flash Lantern and the Colman stove is almost as old.

The stove & Lantern just make this memory even more sweeter.

I have two lanterns a single burner stove and a double burner stove.
I don't see the danger inherent in them..Fire and flammable liquids are an essential part of our existence. As long as equipment is maintained and operated properly the danger level is totally acceptable.
For those saying the lanterns are too bright, you are aware that they do not need to be run at full throttle aren't you?
I have a shield for one of mine and someplace I have a red lens for one also.

Lehmans hardware has gas lighting for those that are interested.

My dad worked for the SP and had a couple of these, I kept one but wish I could find it. I was thinking about it a few days ago but cannot remember where I last saw it.

With exception of carrying a flammable liquid ... this discussion makes me want to rethink my lighting options. Nothing nostalgic, but very functional, Coleman's Camping Coleman Duo LED Lantern. Four D-cell batteries are well over a year old, used every couple months, thinking about replacing the batteries simply to minimize chance of leakage!
