  • We use the low clearances data in our Delorme Street Atlas software, and wouldn't plan a route without it. Like anything else, it's only as good as the user. As said, it doesn't provide any interactivity with the navigation part of your GPS unit - it just displays the info in some fashion on the screen. With Street Atlas, once the route has been automatically generated, I can then look at the route and manually tweak it to avoid any of those low spots or make any other tweaks needed.

With a Garmin, I don't know if you can twiddle the route that way, or if you can control how far ahead those POI icons appear. Just got a Garmin for the toad, and haven't had a chance to play with it all that much yet.

  • Interesting........

We aren't big on 'techno' devices.

Miss Garmin sent me down a route that turned into a pipeline construction road and another time had me turn left on road that ended in a cemetery (real fun turning a 34' 5vr around between old headstones and large pine trees).
After that Miss Garmin got muffled and we went back to Atlas Map etc.

We traveled majority of times using secondary/back roads.
In 7 yrs. of travel we only encountered 'surprise' low clearances 3 times and we just turned around and went alt. route----part of the adventure.
Other low clearances were well marked in advance.

Our 5vr is 13'4" and the biggest issue was low branches in CGs and hanging over streets.
OH..watch for them streets signs placed right at edge of curb on some streets. They can get real close to side of rig when going thru towns

    Look UP........Look UP.......Look UP :B

  • Do not know about this one but the problem with add-ons that are POI's (and t appears to be a POI add-on)is that you can route yourself into a low clearance situation and will be warned a little bit before you get to it.

They do not route you around low clearances automatically. The expensive GPS units for RV's will allow you to put in the height of your rig and route you around low clearances (hopefully)
