Mystery water leak

Hi, hoping I posted this in the correct forum.

I have been having a very intermittent leak in my trailer, underneath the jackknife sofa in the front. That is where the hot water tank is. Occasionally there is a few cups of water under there. I thought maybe it was the hot water tank, so I drained that and bypassed it. Had some water again after a few days. Thought maybe either the cold or hot water line was leaking in that area, right beside the hot water tank. I don't think they are leaking.

I last checked the trailer for water on Monday night, it was bone dry. Had heavy rain late Monday night, there was more water on the floor when I went out and checked again tonight (Thursday). Got up on the roof, and there is a crack in the caulking on the seam between the roof and the front of the trailer. It is on the front corner of the roof, roughly above the area where I am finding water on the floor.

Any chance I actually have a roof leak, and the water is coming in between the outside and inside walls, and dropping down onto the floor? And more important, what king of caulking do I need to buy to fill the crack on the roof? I assume I should not use regular silicone caulking.

Thanks a bunch!
  • Very possible. I have learned the hard way that the obvious can happen :-) Water takes the path of least resistance to the lowest spot. Sometimes that can be clear on the other side of the camper from where the leak is. Corret, do not use silicone. Go to an RV store and ask for self leveling roof sealant. They will probably have some sitting right near the counter and hand you a tube and your ready to go. Just cover the crack and let it sit and it will self level. Check all the other caulk on the trailer while your up there.
