Nashville Traffic Warring Aug 21 -- Total Eclipse

Nashville Traffic WARRING

With three major interstates roads meeting in Nashville, traffic is (can be a problem). However on Aug 21 about noon with the sun goes dark along most of the three interstates and people stop to see the once in a lifetime TOTAL eclipse of the sun expect MAJOR traffic problems.

Is it just me or is all this hype about traffic backups, major traffic jams, sold out hotels/motels, etc. for the eclipse, starting to sound like Y2K all over again?

We live in the path of totality and just out of curiosity I started checking some of the campgrounds for site availability for the 23rd. Mostly no problem if you want a site.

    X2 ... Definitely sounds like Y2K again.

It won't be as bad as the hype, but it won't be a non-event. There are people coming from all over the world, especially to the larger cities where there are other attractions. I guarantee there will be traffic stopped on the sides of all roads, and wrecks from people trying to drive and watch at the same time. You would be prudent to stay off the roads for a couple of hours before and after.

It's also too late to get lodging booked if you don't have it.

I told my cousin she should rent out RV spots in her yard for $$$$, LOL.

  • I can tell you that it is not hype as far as hotel and crampground space.

Our organization made a deal for campsites along the totality, we did have a hold date until 04 August, but the operators have come back to say that they need us to bump the hold date. We did. They are now selling eclipse space for a lot more than our contract.

As far as traffic, I have been in the shadow of four eclipses, and they are so short (like 2 minutes) that even if all the traffic holds for that period, it is no big deal.

  • What you really need is a spot for 2 nights...8/20 & 8/21. I expect heavy traffic before and after.

I am going to my cousin's house in Portland, TN, right on the center line of totality. It will normally be about a 2 hour drive, and I'm leaving very early...like 5:30 AM. The eclipse is about 1:30 PM.

That's because the eclipse is August 21. There is nothing available for the night of 8/20. Econolodge in Grand Rivers KY is getting $300/night for a room and is booked up.

Nashville traffic is bad on a good day.

Oregon SP booked out in less than an hour when 8/21 became available back in January!
