NPS Sequestration. A reversal!

reminds me of the bean counters at North West Airlines. my BIL was a pilot for them and said that one of their routes, Fargo/seattle or some such was audited and the bean counters noted that for years this route had absolutely no increase in passengers so they dropped it. of course this route always had totally full flights so there was no way ridership could increase. :s

Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Lakeshore will also open on May 24 the places that they currently have closed.

I suspect some of the more popular parks operate at a profit. One of the things I keep complaining about, have been for years is "Across the board" cuts.

For example... One governmental division I know of, in it's prime, returned 4.00 to the treasury for every 1.00 spent.. A 400% return.. So what did they do?

Across the board cut it out of existence of course.

Makes sense to me.... NOT.

Note, this may sound like a political statement, but the fact is, Both parties had a hand in it, roughly an equal hand, so it's a balanced comment.

Take a park that is sold out 75% of the summer..> Close it so you get no income from it.. Yup, that is the way to save money all right.

Superintendant Davila responded to me today that loop c will be closed, ranger led evening interpretive programs discontinued, maintenance crews will work 5 days a week instead of 7 this year.
Full return to service is planned for 2014 if a requested rate increase to $18 is approved

We do not see the public camps in our area as competitors. Our federal and State parks are among the finest in the nation, but limit services to the basic necessity as it should be.

This was the argument I pressed when I met with Mr. Davila and his staff in early April. In this instance closure of Elk Mountain Camp would be an overall revenue loss for Wind Caves profit income( tours) as those tour visitors may not make the time to drive back to tour the cave from some other camp. That could result in an overall reduction in visitors to all types of tourism, therefore a potential loss, not a gain to private camps.

A couple of BLM CGs east of Tulsa have announced that they won't open at all this year. I personally won't miss them, but it's disappointing that this is being done.
