I recent bought a 7 year old Winnie with original tires. They LOOKED really good.......but after about 300 miles, one threw a big chunk of tread. Thankfully I noticed it right away before anything really got damaged. ALL 6 of them got replaced.

Some people fall into the Niagra river and go over the falls and live to tell about it. I can't recommend that though.

Some people like to be on the safe side with most things in life; others tend to be more on the edge.

To each his own but making it sound like taking a chance against the odds is a good thing to do......is not a good thing to do, IMHO.

This is a new thought...that tires are perishable


Wonder what the agencies will come up with to address that. I do dislike
the agency mandated TPS outcome from the Ford/Firestone tire PSI deaths

If it was me Ben, I would run em. I would think you would disagree with that opinion and that's fine?

I just have not had any bad experience with ST trailer tires. 1 blowout in my life and I think it was a low pressure deal that I did not catch in time. I will say this. ALL of my experience was with bias tires up until 2 years ago. That is when I went the radials. The only problem I had with cheap ST bias were they wore like butter.

I don't really know why I do not have tire problems? I break every rule known to mankind when it comes to tires.

Cheap ST tires, check.
Always run fast, check.
Always run in hot weather, check.

The only thing I can think of is most don't run bias ply and I did. I also run max pressure and sometimes +10 PSI. I'm also not very heave at 7,000 lbs.

Bought a '95 trailer last summer, and towed it from Boise to Yellowstone & back before I thought to check the tire ages (condition looked fine). 2 on one side were original, the other side was only 7 yrs old.

All 4 are new now though. :)

Definitely consider going to LT (light truck) tires in place of Chinese ST tires like Green Ball, Marathons, carlyles.

The OP is...as think if they got enough 'sure you can', or 'no problem', etc...the
OP would have gone ahead and used those 26 year old tires to tow whatever or just
drive it without towing

Might even be okay for their usage, but that is the question...are they okay?

Gesuse I hope not. My last set of tires was $1,200 dollars!! I don't want them to go up even more with more laws.

Look; this is really simple. Don't like old tires? When you go to buy new ones all you have to do is saunter up to the counter and say: "yo, I don't like old tires so don't put any on my truck; K? I will be checking the date codes when I leave and there better not be any older than ______________."

Pretty simple hu?

Rubber is just organic material that ages like any other organic material
and has a shelf life...rubber is just ('highly processed' with other
'ingredients') juice from the rubber tree...have heard it referenced
as 'The Milk' from a rubber tree

"Perishable" is the 'new' thought in reference to tires now...

As another mentioned...there is a whole set of metrics that has been
known for a looooooooooong time in dealing with 'perishables'...

FIFO, but more than that now that the government is noodling it...lobbyists
will make tons of money, but at the end of the day...think/hope there
will be new rules for tires age management...guessing as a min...storage
environment specifications coming down the pipe. Max/min temps, humidity, etc

For that is the 'product' of tire OEMs...but and again...bean counters
will try to dodge this at all costs...

Worked many side jobs while in college and tire monkey was one. Learned
a ton from the manager/owner. 'HE' would understand and take measures
to manage tires as perishables. He managed his product (which included
services) and guess what...his bottom line came along well...as folks
in the area knew he was a straight shooter. Even other shops sent
their troubles our way and where I learned the most from him

Never had tires last that long, but now that the Suburban is a weekend
vehicle...must noodle how I'll manage...guessing just have to check
their date code and put it in my smart phone calendar to start checking
at some future date...

That's one of the reasons that they give publicly.

There is NO GOOD reason that an outer limit should not be set on the age of tires when they are sold, 4 years for example.

And yes, dealers have no real qualms about selling 5 year old tires just as though they were "new"......usually.

Tires in AZ age much faster then tires in MN. How does the Federal government go about deciding what is correct? If this is done at the state level, then we have 50 different regulations.
