I already have my asbestos drawers on so here goes: If you are driving a class A with a toad and are following an Amish Buggy down a 55 MPH road at 12 MPH it is ok to pass them no matter the road markings. Do not follow them for two miles, look in your mirrors and see the traffic backed up behind you. Take notice of the road rage azzhole that pulled out from somewhere behind you and almost caused a multiple vehicle accident. The letter of the law may say that you cannot cross a solid yellow line, but those markings were engineered to allow safe passing at the posted speed limit. The Buggy was mostly to the right off the fogline, only 18" or so protruded into the traffic lane. Use a little common sense!

The one and only time I agree with breaking the law......

I too will pass on these types of slow traffic situations but only when motioned to do so by the slow moving vehicle. This insures me the slow moving vehicle is aware of me starting to pass them.Never had a issue with Law Enforcement doing this. Its probably a common sense thing to do... Roy ken

Agree with all the previous posters. Isn't there something about passing a vehicle with a slow moving orange triangle that allows it?

I guess it just depends on where you are. In Great Falls, MT on a 30mph street with double yellow lines. I got caught behind an old truck that was traveling at about 10mph. I follow for a while, then seeing traffic was backing up behind me, I waited for a clear shot and passed the truck. No sooner than I pulled out to pass, I saw the blue lights coming from the rear. The cop pulled me over and gave me a good tongue lashing. Said you might be able to do that in Tennessee, but not so in Great Falls. I ask about the traffic hazard the truck was causing. He stated there was no minimum speed limit on a city street. Gave me a warning and sent me on my way.

Actually he was wrong

Montana code 61-8-311

Minimum Speed Limit: A motor vehicle may not be driven at a speed slow enough to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic.

We have this situation more than most of you, but I will provide a universally workable solution that I have been using.

Passcars are not 8' wide and most (not all) are better performing than my classic coach. So, when we end up in that situation, we will pull over and invite the tailback to pass us. Then they are behind the Amish wagon. They can often pass without crossing the centerline. In more than a few instances, we have ended up first in line behind the wagon again. If I am lucky, by then we have hit a section of road where I can pass.

You are just passing an "obstruction."

A slow moving obstruction, but an obstruction never the less.
