Propride P3 and tongue weight?

I posted this at the end of another thread and didn't know if I would get responses so I brought it on it's own.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I do think I will end up in a bigger truck one day, but I think I am going to upgrade the hitch to a ProPride P3 soon. I know the truck will get up the hill quicker and probably give me a better ride but I think the hitch will make the biggest difference in the driving comfort right now.

My question is do I need to worry about being right at 13% tongue weight with this hitch? I would love to put my spare tire back on the rear of the trailer and get it out of the bed of my truck. This would also give me a few more pounds of available payload in my 1/2 truck if I don't need to keep it right at 13%.

Thanks.

I would look for a used one before dropping full price though. Be patient and keep an eye on the classifieds etc. They come up for sale once in a while. I've bought 3, paid $1k for the first, $400 for the second and $250 for the 3rd. Refurb'd then resold the last two for $1k each..

If you ever find one at those prices PM me I live in the Montreal area, willing to travel to Ontario to pick it up.
  • a Hensley hitch. Could you tell me/us is it really worth the money? At over 2 grand (new) is it most better than other hitches out there such as Equilizer?

Worth every penny. I've used basic wd hitches and the Equil-i-zer as well and though they got the job done, they just don't compare. I'll never use another hitch.

Hensley also sell factory refurbished ones for about 1/2 the price of new.
  • Burbman is right. I have a Propride P3 hitch and no longer worry about tongue weight as it relates to sway. The Propride and Hensley are designed to prevent sway from happening in the first place. The only thing you should have to worry about with the tongue weight is for your payload totals. If you are over payload by a little, don't sweat it. The truck won't break because you're 100 pounds over. The truck will handle it fine but don't go WAY over. That's when you could have trouble. I found that my half ton just wasn't adequate in that area. It really is amazing how much stuff you bring with you and the weight is deceiving. I was always over payload by several hundred pounds so I traded in the 1/2 ton I had for a 3/4 ton and now have no issues. I know it's a tough pill to swallow money wise but I figured I would trade up while my 1/2 ton still had really good value. Your situation is likely different so do whatever you think is the best and most of all, enjoy the heck out of your camping trips!
  • rsaylor3 thanks for posting this question.

Short answer is no. Tongue weight range for travel trailers should be between 10-15%. The P3 and the Hensley don't rely on tongue weight to control sway, so lightening the tongue won't have any negative effects on handling or sway.

    Sorry to hijack this thread.

BurbMan I notice your signature that you have a Hensley hitch. Could you tell me/us is it really worth the money? At over 2 grand (new) is it better than other hitches out there such as Equilizer?

    Thanks your input is appreciated.
