Roadtrip Nation RV burns to the ground on highway!!

When I was given my walk-thru on my new 5th wheel, the guy pointed to the fire extinguisher and said: "see that extinguisher? that's what you run past on the way out the door!"

Those little fire extinguishers can be very handy in an emergency. Many years back RCA color TVs had a switch that would catch fire when you thought you were shutting it off. It turns out they also used that switch on Admiral TVs. I turned the TV off to eat lunch on Sat. and then had to go to the front door for something. I glanced at the TV and there were pictures flashing on the screen. When I looked closer I saw flames. We emptied the whole fire extinguisher into the back of the TV & then called the fire dept. Two fire trucks followed by about 20 cars showed up. It was fun to watch them all in our dead end street. Had to be '68 or '69

We saw a mh go up in flames several years ago. In less than five minutes it was fully engulfed. Really opened our eyes to the fact that we need exit plans of another sort!!!!

I have one of those in my kitchen...it's for a grease fire or something burning in the oven!

I also have about six big CO2 extinguishers in the bus.

Back in the mid 1980s I was nearing the end of a two month cross country with my girl friend. I was visiting a childhood friend who had moved from LI NY to Tucson AZ after serving in the air force. We were spending most of our time in their house but were sleeping in the camper which was parked in front of their house. When we opened the door to their house and were walking to the camper I smelled wood burning, it smelled a little like someone was having a charcoal cook out. When I got to the camper the smell was stronger and it was obvious the smell was coming from the inside of the camper. My girl friend was a little scatterbrained and it turned out that she started a fire in the camper. I think it may have been a smoldering cigarette but I can't be sure after all these years. I have smoked and stopped many time but if I was going to dump out the ash tray I would always run them under water before putting the buts in a trash can. Apparently the butt was still smoldering when it was thrown in the metal trash can. It got hot enough to burn thru the vinyl floor and char the wood. I had a can of Coleman stove / lantern gas near the can, if the can was a little closer or the fire got hotter it would have destroyed everything

stumbled across this and since I was on the RV when it burnt down I thought I'd reply.

Our '94 Monaco Dynasty was completely engulfed in flames in less than 5 minutes.
At about 7 minutes the flames burst through windshield. There were strong winds that day which sped up the destruction.

Thankfully all of us were safe. We did lose everything except what were were wearing and the cameras in our hands. We debated wether or not to include the fire in the episode but it was such a pivotal moment in the trip. All 5 of us really took stock of what was important in our lives. The belongings were nice but it was the people in our lives that really mattered. Hopefully others could learn from that as well as to keep going even when trials come your way. We continued the roadtrip in a older Safari that is in our fleet. We had 5 more weeks on the road and it was one of the best summers of my life.

It was a sad end to a great RV. We racked over 205k miles over many years roadtripping around the US filming the public television show.

I was at a RV rally where the fire department had a booth. They showed us how those little extinguishers that come with our RV's settle and don't work when needed in an emergency. :R

I just found this series program on public TV. I Didn't know that they were reruns!!!

It is interesting though watching these kids travel across the US in the RV. And actually a program with a human interest meaning to it versus the violent cartoons they make nowadays. I think it should be on prime time.:C

All you have to do is go on you tube and search "RV Fires" Its crazy. But I bet the raito is still less than car fires.

this 5er fire has been posted on here before. but it shows just how fast these things can go up. Granted the wind wasn't helping matters.

I have 2 family members that are firemen. When they get calls to a mobile home fire they always joke and say whats the point? most of it will be gone by the time we get there.
