Rollover

On the way home this evening I saw a TT rolled over across two lanes of the interstate. As we approach the holiday weekend it was a reminder to me to not rush and to keep adequate vehicle spacing.

I'm not accusing this guy of speeding or following too closely, since I didn't see the accident happen. (no injuries btw). The skids gave the impression of a fairly straight panic stop before things got wonky.

  • Hate to think what the inside of that trailer looks like.
  • Obviously not enough TV to CONTROL the TT. 1/2 ton vehicles have soft mushy suspension systems which allow the TT to sway and fish tail. The TV is probably a short wheel base Tahoe which is also a problem, the longer the wheel base the more control over the TV. See rigs like that swaying on the hiway all the time. Many don't want to spend the money for upgraded suspensions, anti sway bars, and WD hitches. All you can do is cross your fingers, floor board it and hope you can get around them before they loose control on the hiway.
  • Since everyone is guessing I will to…. We can tell nothing about the TV and little about the TT except it has 3 waste tanks… 1 over the axles and the other 2 behind the axles and a extended rear platform and rear mounted spare… the 2 rear tanks appear to have enough bulge to them, maybe causing significant under loading of the tongue…

Maybe he asked here about rear loading before and got the old, sure it’s ok I do it all the time routine…

    Thanks for the reminder…
I just hope the reminder isn’t necessary
  • My first thought was "that's my rig!!". But I'm clear across the country from it I know it's not.
I'll jump in and guess also as I can armchair investigate with the best of them.
That is a mid to late 90's Suburban or Tahoe, and it's most likely a Tahoe. I recognize the rear end as it looks just like mine, and you can make out the vertical line of barn door windows on the vehicle.

That era Suburban has a long overhang between the rear tires and the bumper. In the picture the tires appear to be really close to the rear bumper which would make it a Tahoe. So I'm claiming it as a Yukon/Tahoe.

I'll put the trailer as a 24 footer because the space between the rear axle and bumper is filled almost completely by what look to be 35 - 40 gallon tanks. My 27 footer is laid out the same underneath and definitely has a few more feet than that between the rear tank and bumper.
  • Too many unknown factors to even guess. Was the driver experienced in towing? Speed? Condition of brakes? TT and TV loading? Was it a panic situation? Did the driver fall asleep? DUI? Any number of, or combination of several small things at the wrong time could cause this. Drive like this could happen to you and you'll be better off for it.
