Round Bar Angle Adjustment Question

With the "new to us" Dutchmen we just bought, it came with a Draw Tite round bar setup, that has the washer tilt adjustment.

If I remember correctly, there is 7 washers currently, and with the bars angled slighlty up with 6 links under tension the fa weight was exactly the same as no trailer, returning 100% of the weight.

I ran with 7 links under tension, not 6 down the road. Bars still had a slight upward angle with 7 under tension.

I have the original style DC setup (u-bolt model) that I want to install on the new trailer, and need more bar angle for proper setup, so how many more washers can be added? ! washer equals about 1 chain link from what I remember reading (somehwere), correct?

Or do I go back to the trunnion set up like on our old trailer? I have the older washer style model with 2 holes for angle adjustment. I know, suspect for cracking- I check it after every trip. If the trunnion is the way to go, I plan on buying the new style "toothed" washer mode for more fine adjustment (which is about 1/2 link per tooth?). Or maybe an Equil-I-Zer 4 way system???? That "argument" is for another thread (which there are many already!)

TY for the help & suggestion!!!!
Chris

TY Bob! Didn't even think about the fact some chains may be longer than others (# of links)!!!!

I have edited the post to reflect this correct info!

7 links- slight upward bend with a lighter fa than unloaded.
6 links- slightly more bend upward (not crazy extreme though!) returning fa to unloaded weight on the nose!

Talked to Reese/Draw Tite today and was told max number of washers for tilt is 9.

So if I add 2 more washers and go 8 links under tension (before dc is mounted) I hope to have enough room for the dual cam. With the round bar system, is it ok if the bars are pointed slightly down as well? I know parallel with the frame is ideal, or slightly up is ok as well, but what about when using the dc (old school model w/ u bolts)? Or go back to the trunnion model, possibly ordering the new model with the toothed washer?

    TY!

  • Round bars should be close to parallel to the trailer tongue, trunnions angle down. You should start with by using the number of links specified by the manufacturer and then use washers to get the correct amount of tilt and WD. Also, to the OP, when you ask a hitch question and reference the number of links, use the number of links under tension, not hanging. That information is irrelevant as all chains may not be the same length
  • My understanding with my own round bar WDH is that angled up is not a good thing. I've read through the installation manuals on a few different models and all say get them as close to parallel as possible, or slightly angled down. On your chain links it's not so much how many link you have hanging, but how many are being used. Again, the manufacturers I've researched have all said use a minimum of 5 links. Hope this helps, as I'm also currently learning on the fly.
