Round bars

Are the round bars too bent or too upwards? I used the second link. Should it be better to just use the first link and have the round bars level on the tongue/chassis of the trailer?

I don't know if the weight of the trailer is impt to know how many links on the chain or how bent the round bars should be or not. My trailer weighs 7,260 lbs

  • If it was me I would tip it back one notch on the adjuster. I like having a little extra wiggle room to take a link or let a link out depending on weight. The other thing I am seeing is I think you are using the snap up bracket wrong. It looks like you have your chain too high and are actually hooking it on the hook that you put your leverage bar on to snap it up. Is there a hook in the center of the bracket? That should be where the chain connects

  • Read the instructions that came with the wdh. If you dont have them then contact the manufacturer or a hitch shop and get them.
  • Barney's Link. Read that, 2-5 times. The WDH transfers some weight from the truck's rear axle to both the truck front axle and a smaller amount to the trailer axles. The more ball tilt/angle, the more distributed. The fewer links under tension, the more weight distributed. You only have 8 links under tension, which seems low. Combined with little hitch head angle, I would say there is little to no weight transferred off the rear axle.

You are correct. It is not angled. It needs to be angled or tilted backwards to be set up correctly.
Most if not some of Reese are not angled according to this photo.

Maybe it is the angle of the picture but your hitch ball does not appear to be set correctly. Absent that nothing else will be correct. The ball needs to be angled backwards slightly and then you can reset the weight distribution bars, links, tension, etc. As Barney said start over with the link and you will get it correct. If the ball is set correctly, the bars should be nearly parallel for that hitch as measured against the trailer's frame. You are way off.

  • See the thread stuck at the top of this forum on how to set up a Weight Distributing hitch. It will answer your questions. Dont worry about how much the bars are bent.
