I'm sure your right.
Fortunately, lots of people buy RV's and only use them a few times a year. When the "new" wears off they sit and languish.
That is true but with record sales there are just many more of those "some timers" filling up campgrounds. Even some of my favorite state parks are tough to get a site even during the week. Five years ago it wasn't as hard. - PadlinExplorerNot real reliable, but according to wikipedia there are 13000 private and 1600 public campgrounds in the US. If you take a guess at the average # of sites in a campground, say 100 (you may have a better wild guess then me), you get 1,460,000 sites.
RVIA says there are 10,000,000 households with an RV. - VeebyesExplorer IIIt all depends. Depends on a high demand area or not. Depends on day of the week. We left a MD SP last tuesday. Only one other camper was left in the loop. Over the weekend the electric loop was near full. The dry loop was all but empty.
- DutchmenSportExplorerThat's the reason why we sold our house in the city after they told us we have to move our camper. And we moved to a house in the country or we can park our camper year round if we want and we do. And we use a camper all summer long at home and we take it to whatever campsite we can find on weekends and of course our 2 weeks in the year. So we use ours pretty much all year round but we had to do it on our own property to use it. Nothing wrong with that because we completely enjoy the camper this way. Yes we make reservations usually 2 to 3 weeks ahead.
- GordonThreeExplorerThis year's been the worst luck I've had getting last minute spots without reservation. That's at rustic State and Federal campground too, as well as just random clearing in the woods.
- BB_TXNomadRVs at record of near record sales every year for the last several years. New RV park development not keeping up.

I am convinced there are 10 times more RV's and Campers than there are campsites in America. Every time I try try to make a reservation there are no vacancies ......
I'm sure it is more like 100 to 1. Maybe higher. That would only mean that an RV was in use 1% of the time.
But good point anyway. It is just too hard to get a site anymore. My advice for those who can, is learn to love boondocking.
Kind of funny, I bought the geezer pass 2 years ago, almost on the day I became eligible. Have not used it even once. Boondocking every time since then. We'll use it, eventually. - spoon059Explorer IIWe started camping 9 years ago. Went down to Florida over the winter and got a spot the day we arrived. The last 2 years we couldn't camp in Florida because their were no vacancies when we called 10 months in advance. We finally caught a break and got a spot for 2 weeks this February.
Economy is doing well, fuel prices are down. Lots of people enjoying their RVs. Its a good time to be alive, isn't it? - PadlinExplorer

That's why so many of them now have 14 day stay limits. Nothing like somebody getting up and going to work to break the ambience of a forest campground.
One reason we found is so many are finding it way cheaper to live in state parks in their RV than to rent an apartment.
Had an employee that jumped from state park to state park for all of one season, May thru Oct. Split up with his wife and this was all he could afford to do. None of the local SP's have hookups and the showers are pretty old and decrepit. Had one of those tents that goes in your truck bed. 14 days then move on to the next, 3 SP's were involved.
