The Costco AMEX card gives 3% cash back on fuel purchases at all gas stations, not just Costco stores. That includes Chevron, Exxon, Mobil, Texaco, Valero, etc. I don't think you get cash back at grocery stores and unbranded quick stops.
On the other hand, the Costco AMEX T&C's only mentions gasoline. It doesn't say you get cash back on diesel purchases, even at their own store. I can't say if they actually do or not...
