Just a point of reference, we recently took a set of Good Year P metric car tires ( Aquatread ) out of service on a car in the family. These passenger car tires were on this car for just over 11 years. They still had over half their original tread, so as we can see, they sat a lot. Yet, when they were used, throughout their 11 year life, they always performed as expected, on the highway, or on city streets. None of them failed at any time, in any way during their life.
Are they, as passenger car tires, made "better", to a "higher standard" ? I don't know. What I do know is they worked. We got our money out of that set of tires.
Yes-passenger tires are tested to higher standards than ST tires. However, this isn't an apples to apples comparison-as ST trailer tires are subject to much different on the road characteristics than a passenger tire. Much more dramatic sidewall pressure when turning, no sophisticated suspension systems (for the most part) etc.
BTW-running 11 year old tires on anything that travels down the road is very dangerous. You got lucky.
From the "for what it's worth departments here"...... I don't feel "we got lucky" at all. Michelin, Good Year and other majors routinely say say ten years is acceptable. ( EDIT: on P and LT tires )
So I will respectfully disagree with your statement that we got lucky. I think what we got was "good, normal life out of a product that is designed and tested to high standards of safety".
Not all products are built to those same standards. ....just sayin'.....
To all out there: do the homework. Choose carefully.
Unless I misread your post the tires in question per YOUR STATEMENT were 11 years old-
"The British Rubber Manufacturers Association (BRMA) recommended practice issued June, 2001, states "BRMA members strongly recommend that unused tyres should not be put into service if they are over six years old and that all tyres should be replaced ten years from the date of their manufacture."
