I'm thinking if you have a battery system, it would be considered a self contained unit. A generator is not necessary?
It is if you want to recharge that battery system you mentioned, UNLESS, you have a solar set up.
If your RV has an engine with an alternator or a tow vehicle with one, you have sufficient recharging capability without the need for solar or an independent generator. It's not the most efficient way to recharge of course, but it is workable.
