- edatlantaExplorer IIWhen living in a s&b in Louisiana many years ago the water valve in my washer failed. Fortunately the water flowed down to the floor, under the wall and into the garage. I'm just glad the slab was slightly lower on the garage side. I pulled in to my driveway and saw this "river" flowing out. Never again did I leave for more than a day without turning off the water and water heater. I'm still the same way in my RV.
- sch911ExplorerWe don't turn the water off. We have a sump pump system with a water powered backup. I do turn off the water heater, and the hot water valve.
- BumpyroadExplorerI certainly turn the washing machine valves off. I used to turn the valve at the street off but the water company made that inconvenient so now I just worry about the washer. I turn off the power to the water heater as it is sort of stupid to keep the water warm when I am not there.
bumpy - PadlinExplorerI do if I remember, also shutoff the furnace (water heater). Turn a valve, flip a switch, not worth not doing. If I remember.
- gboppExplorerI turn the water off. I've had leaks and broken pipes, it's not fun.
It doesn't matter if it's winter or summer, I'll turn it off.
If I forget, I don't worry about it while I'm gone. - lawnspecialtiesExplorerYes, I do. We have a ball valve in the line in a closet. So it takes all of two seconds to turn it off so why not?
- NanciLExplorer IIYes
I shut the main off and I flip the breaker for the water heater off.
We had a water heater leak while we were away and it not only burned out an element in the water heater, but ruined a solid oak floor
Lesson learned !
Jack L - fitznjExplorerYes - I'm on a well, so I just unplug the pump; Being flooded in NOT fun.....
Gerry - bobsinnExplorerYes, Got a $260 (for a month) water bill after a ballcock let go when we were away for a week. That won't happen again. Plus turn off the water heater.

When you leave home for a few days, do you turn off the main water valve at your house?
Wife and I considered doing this, after a fitting on a water line let loose, upstairs in her boss' house. It was over their kitchen, damaged cabinets, hardwood floors, etc. What a mess.
To do this, I'd have to add a cut-off after the line to the lawn sprinkler system, oh, and where will in-laws or neighbor kids get access to water to water potted plants in our backyard ...
So, in the end, we don't. But thought about it!
