Solar Panel Add-on

have a 100w Solar Panel on our new Winnebago. Can't find info on website but, does anyone know if additional panels can be added? Looks like there is room on roof for at least one and probably two more. Looking for something more or less plug and play. Figure if 100w is good, 200 or 300 must be better.

I was reading on someone's idea of mounting solar panel on hinges just above the windows of the coach. These could be raised up after you get setup and give you sun tracking maybe. The area around the windows seems to be a good place for portable and movable panels maybe... In travel mode the panels would cover down over the outside of the windows. Once you get setup then they will act like an awning for the window...

Thought that was a pretty idea if you looking for additional room to mount some additional panels....

  • Go to Arizona Wind and Sun AW&S for comments and information on a lot of solar issues. These guys know their stuff and their equipment is first class. If you care for a post-graduate education on solar, go to Handy Bob's blog and follow his threads. Handy Bob This guy's got it right but his ideas go against a lot of "conventional" knowledge. I designed my system based on his ideas and thoughts and it works JUST LIKE HE SAID IT WOULD. Lots of good info out there, but a lot of folks who don't know what they're talking about too. Read it all and at least you'll be smart enough to ask the right questions.
  • Or if you add an MPPT controller you might be able to add three panels, pairs in series for 24 volts, and leave original wiring intact.

The controller change is an easy swap. Most of the work is in running the cables if you need to go bigger, which you very likely will have to if you want max efficiency.
  • Thanks 2oldman. I need to get better informed on the solar. I found the controller but not sure how robust it is yet. Is it an easy thing to upgrade the controller. Like remove and replace? Does wiring gauge change with increased amps/volts?
  • Sure, but your controller (and wiring) must be able to handle the increased amperage if parallel, voltage if series.
