makes sense to me. partly depends on whether cages have solid bottom or wire mesh.

Even with a solid bottom, the smell permeates in an enclosed room. The pee/poo doesn't have to physically get into the mattress for the mattress to hold the smell. Remember a mattress is made up of absorbative materials. Unstained wood can absorb odors also without needing to have the cause actually spilled on it.
