speedometer not working but odometer does

We just purchase a 1999 coachmen santara class a motor home with a Ford chasis. The speedometer doesnt work but odometer and trip meter does. Checked wires..no loose wires, no check engine light or no flashing overdrive light. Any ideas how to fix this..we are stumped. The mechanic where we purchased rv has no clue. Thank you in adavance

  • That use to be a speedometer issue. With modern technology, it is now an instrument cluster issue. Google "speedometer shop" for your nearest major city. There are online instrument cluster exchanges, but I have never dealt with any.
  • Not sure if that speedometer is a mechanical drive or a stepper motor.
If it is mechanical, the needle could be stuck. If it is electronic, the stepper motor could be bad. Stepper motors are replaceable, you can find directions on how to the job on the internet.
  • Another option is to use the speed display from a GPS in lieu of the speedometer

X2 This is what I would do. But I am cheap. LOL
  • I have a 99 F250, once in a while my spedo won't work and my ABS light comes on. I have traced it to the plug connection on the Brain box for the ABS. I don't know if the connections get dirty or loose, but I can wiggle the plugs and it will work fine for quite a while. Mine is located in front of my drivers side battery (diesel).
  • Is this an OBD2 Vehicle? I have a Scantool MX that plugs into the computer then displays vehicle information on my smartphone using the Torque app. I have verified two separate vehicles having dash display issues while verifying the computer sees the correct information. For speed, I'd look for a free app on smartphone or use the Dashboard function of your GPS. Some GPS devices can display speed as a large display. Garmin used to call this Dashboard.

You can always try to message this guy and see if he got it fixed, unless you ended up buying his rig. ;)
