Unless you are ice fishing for survival it's a stupid pastime... Little more energy can be gained from the meat normally caught than was expended catching it... In a survival situation that can help you keep your "bank account" closer to the black but, overall, you are wasting energy...
Then you just don't get it.
Some people love fresh caught fish.
For some it's the social gathering. Small villages of fishing huts will pop up, much like an RV park. Nope you don't get it.
I'm afraid you aren't getting it. In the situation your refer to the ice fishing is a sideline to the social gathering, an excuse if you may. - HammerboyExplorer

I guess with that logic the same could be said for deer hunting, I always kid my deer hunting buddy especially when he comes home empty handed I tell hime how expensive deer meat is when you factor in time off from work, all his gear, etc. Obviously he does for enjoyment and being outdoors so I wouldn't call it stupid.
The list of stupid pastimes go on and on if your purely looking at it from your perspective.
Going to big league ballgames is stupid because you can watch it for free on tv and have better views and commentary.
Going on vacation somewhere is stupid when you can stay home and watch YouTube videos and look at pictures online etc.
Going out to eat is stupid when you can cook it at home for a fraction of the price.
As I said the list goes on and one.

https://youtu.be/23I0YYgGVIk - Edd505ExplorerI grew up in WI and they plowed parking lots on the ice for fishing jamborees. My dad a a buddy built the first gas power auger I had ever seen with a V shaft Briggs mounted to a wash machine agitater turned upside down. I would drill holes where you wanted 3 for buck. Dad also taught me how to drive on icy roads on a frozen lake. Never lake Michigan but smaller in land lakes and ice was 36" thick or more, stay away from the ice heaves, where the two sides freeze and meet in the middle, it's thin ice.
