Stony Brook Hospital Long Island, NY info needed

Hello all
My mother, who has terminal cancer, will be staying for an extended period of time at this hospital. If all goes well that is. Last time she was there 2 months. We spent a small fortune on hotels, just to bathe and sleep, couple times per week.

We are looking for info, from anyone who is familiar with area. First, don't know if the hospital would allow an rv to park in their parking facilities. Last time we slept in our car and purchased the month pass. It will be my father and myself taking turns to be with her, but as my father is older and not fluent enough in English, I need to be close by in case something comes up. Hence trying to get an RV close to, if not in the parking itself. So if anything arises I am right there. And as well, my dad would be close at hand for me to check on him while I am with my mother.

Also, anyone know where to rent decent priced RV's? Is there an owner to owner site you would recommend? Cheapest I've seen are just the same as hotels. Cant afford to pay that as we are in financial stress due to her illness. The RV will stay put 99% of the time and not move. Non smokers and clean and respectful. If there is anyone here that would consider renting theirs I would greatly appreciate it, as well as any info anyone can provide.

  • Check with the extended stay hotels as well. you may find as good a "deal" with one of them vs a trailer and finding camping sites available. It is coming up to closing time on Long Island for many camp sites and far too many of them might require residency for getting in or else for better rates.

But the FIRST place to check is with Stony Brook Hospital. You may even find short term house/apartment rentals to fit your needs since there are a fair amount of September through May rentals for "off season" rates.
  • As Dar said, check with the hospital, we have used the guest house at VCU medical center a couple of times and most other larger hospitals have facilities as well. Call them at (631) 444-7412. With this being a University Hospital they should have a guest house or possibly a hostel arrangement available. Possibly an older Dorm building at the least.
I dont think most hospitals will allow you to park an rv there, there would be concerns over water, both fresh and waste, and setting a precedent which others may abuse in the future.
    Good Luck
  • There are trailer rentals on LI. Google them. The season is ending so you might get a deal. Otherwise consult with the hospital and see if you can rent a room in a house someplace close.
  • I've stayed for extended periods in 2 hospital parking lots in the mid west, both were free open lots. The only problem I could see was getting thru the maze into the lot esp with a larger motorhome. In addition to, or instead calling the social office, I'd call hospital security and ask where in the parking lot they wanted you to park.
  • Call Stony Brook and ask for a social worker. They will have resources on free/low cost places to stay. Most cities have these places they are just not well known. You may also be able to rent a dorm room for the time of your mothers stay.
