Disclaimer- I have used Catalytic heaters quite often. But...
It's doable, and lot's get away with it, but I wouldn't do it now.
- Catalytic heaters do produce CO as well as CO2, they simply produce it at a level lower than is considered dangerous.
- The catalytic pad can become contaminated both by bad fuel and by simple dust- they are supposed to be covered when not in use. If contaminated, the CO production goes way up.
- Statistics are hard to find, but this CDC pdf file suggests that an average of roughly 20-40 people a year die of CO poisoning in tents and campers.
It's doable, and lot's get away with it, but I wouldn't do it now.
